History of the Student Senate

The Student Senate of Ouachita Baptist University began with the writing of the original constitution in 1949.  Since then, many significant changes have been made, even recently.  In the fall of 1999 amendments were made to the constitution, and the Student Senate almost doubled in size when class officers became voting members of the organization.  In January of 2000 the bylaws were updated to match the current activities of the organization.  Within subcommittee meetings, duties of each representative constantly change with the changing needs of the student body.

Dr. Hal Bass has been regularly attending Student Senate meetings since the fall of 1980 when he was first elected as the faculty advisor.  Since then, he has been extremely valuable to the ever-changing body of representatives keeping the meeting in line with parliamentary procedure, school policy, and his vast political wisdom.

As has been from day one, the Student Senate meets once a week to report the activities that have been accomplished during the week and to keep informed of current events effecting the school.  In the last few years, the Student Senate has had an increase in activity.  What use to be a weekly meeting has become the constant upkeep of an organization.  A subcommittee of the Senate meets almost every day of the school year, and the Student Senate Office is open daily.
