Committee Reports

Treasurer Moore, chair of the Finance committee, said that he needs to see all chairs of committees after the meeting.  The Faculty-Administration committee reported that they are getting a list of university committees together, and that senators, as well as other Ouachita students will be asked to sit in on these committees.  The Campus Life committee announced that they would be bringing things to the floor in new business.  President Mary Carole Young announced that the Executive committee would meet Sunday, September 23 at 8:30 in the office.  Secretary Schartung announced that the Traffic Court would meet on Wednesday and asked everyone to spread the word.  President Mary Carole Young announced Jason Gerber as the chair of the Food committee.

Unfinished Business

President Mary Carole Young announced for one last time (she promised) the policy on absences.  She wanted to be sure that everyone was very clear on the policy.  She then thanked everyone for working their office times.  Also, senators were reminded of being invited to the football game against SAU.  Tickets were still available.  Finally, she announced that due to a lack of interest, the Senate would not be sponsoring a Tiger Serve Day team.

New Business

Coach Sharp and Randy Garner talked about a contest to create words for the fight song.  They gave details and let us know that Dr. Westmoreland was in full support.  Their request was that the Senate sponsors (handles the promoting) a contest to come up with new words.  There has been a web page set up that outlines all the details and that entries can be sent in from.  They have put in a combined total of $300 for a prize.  Senior Senator David Nelson motioned to support this.  The motion passed unanimously.  It was decided that the PR committee would handle the promotion.

Senior Class President Lindsey Little motioned that the Senate contribute $200 to the prize money for the contest.  Her motion passed unanimously.

In other new business, President Mary Carole Young announced that we would be having t-shirts made as has been done in the past.  She has contacted people to come up with possible designs.  Senators were asked to sign up for a size this week in the Senate office.

Sophomore Senator Nancy Goodwin asked if it was possible to move our fall blood drive up.  President Mary Carole Young and Secretary Michael Schartung informed her that Kenny Schweer has been looking into it, but it does not look possible.

Junior Senator Kristen Rickett made a motion coming out of the Campus Life committee to look in to getting new American and Arkansas flags for the plaza.  There was a second.  In discussion things were brought up about how the process of bringing things to the floor typically works.    Lindsey Little moved to table the matter until we had more information.  There was a second.  The motion was tabled.

Treasurer Collier Moore motioned to allocate a maximum $200 to buy red, white and blue ribbons to give out at the football game.  There was a second and the motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned without objection at 6:31 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Michael C. Schartung
Senate Executive Secretary
